- Two facts decide most plumbing here, and neither is about the weather in any ordinary sense. One is where the suburb sits. The other is when the housing was built.
- **This is a piped valley that fills from the sky, not from a river.** Marrickville sits in a catchment of about 7.9 square kilometres draining to the Cooks River through four outfalls: the Eastern Channel, the Central Channel, the Western Channel and the Malakoff Tunnel. Almost all of that path is piped, and the surface above it is largely roof, road and paving. Heavy rain reaches the system in minutes, peaks hard, and is usually gone within the hour.
- This is a different mechanism from river flooding and should not be described as one. A property nowhere near open water can still get a surcharge through a floor waste.
